The American Academy of Sleep Medicine & Gina Merritt

Gina Merritt, a doctor in Middletown, Connecticut, has a vast array of contacts that she largely attributes to her membership with various professional and medical organizations and groups.  While Merritt has connections with the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Thoracic Society, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, there’s one group that is especially significant to Gina Merritt, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Gina Merritt is a proud member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for many reasons.  As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Merritt is highly trained with a detailed hands-on knowledge of the body.  As she regularly treats people with a focus on the musculoskeletal system, Gina Merritt is able to see the physical damage done to the body because of a lack of sleep.

Many of Merritt’s patients think that sleep deprivation and other sleep issues only affect their mental alertness and general feeling of well being.  While Gina Merritt tells these patients that they’re right in that sleep deprivation affects them in these ways, there are many other dangerous ways in which sleep deprivation can work.

As studies continue and develop in their specificity and complexity, Gina Merritt and others in her profession are seeing more and more the damaging results of sleep deprivation.  From internal organ failure to psychotic-related issues, sleep deprivation is getting more attention than ever before.  As this area of research continues to build and become more pressing in importance, Gina Merritt is proud to have the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as a resource.

As a member, Gina Merritt enjoys several benefits, including a subscription to Critical Care Medicine, a subscription to Critical Connections, professional resources, the benefits of SCCM advocacy efforts, networking opportunities with her local chapter, award and grant opportunities, the chance to join SCCM’s Creative Community, access to eCommunities, and discounts.

Gina Merritt & the Society of Critical Care Medicine

Dr. Gina Merritt in Middletown, Connecticut, is a proud member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).  As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Merritt considers critical care to be an integral part of what she does at Middlesex Multispecialty Group.  For Merritt and professionals like her, membership with the Society of Critical Care Medicine is practically essential in order to be as effective as possible.

The Society of Critical Care Medicine in Brief

For those who aren’t familiar with the SCCM, you should know that it was founded in 1970 by 29 physicians who felt that the needs of the desperately sick (i.e. critically ill) were not being properly met.  They created the Society of Critical Care Medicine, which is, today, a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Today, the Society of Critical Care Medicine is based in Chicago, and works diligently to ensure uniform practices and high standards in critical care across the nation.  From infants to adults, the Society of Critical Care Medicine ensures that everyone gets excellent treatment, whether they’re suffering from internal issues (heart attack, stroke), or are the victims of external violence (e.g. gunshot wounds, burns, etc.).

Gina Merritt & SCCM

As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, GinaMerritt considered membership with the Society of Critical Care Medicine to be indispensable.  While many professionals may be content to limit their professional associations to the larger and broader professional organizations, Gina Merritt feels that the Society of Critical Care Medicine is too important to not be involved in her practice.

Merritt feels that the resources and vast network (close to 16,000 SCCM members in over 100 countries) that the Society of Critical Care Medicine provides is too important to not take advantage of.  She hopes to be a member of the SCCM for many more years to come.

Member of the American Thoracic Society: Gina Merritt

The American Thoracic Society (ATS) is the perfect organization for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Gina Merritt.  The ATS combines Merritt’s three interests in one organization: pulmonary, critical care, and sleep.  It happens that these three areas of practice are also the three subspecialties that Gina Merritt is certified in by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

Dr. Gina Merritt believes that joining the American Thoracic Society wasn’t just in line with her professional interests, but it also provides her with invaluable resources and connections that she can use to help patients who are suffering from a variety of health issues.

For those who aren’t familiar with the American Thoracic Society, you should know that the society is relatively small considering the size of the medical industry in the United States.  The American Thoracic Society has around 15,000 members internationally – still a respectable number considering the specialties that the ATS deals with.

The American Thoracic Society, which was founded in 1905 through an effort to discover a cure for tuberculosis, is the leading medical association in the areas of critical illnesses, pulmonary diseases, and sleep-related breathing disorders like sleep apnea.

GinaMerritt is proud to be a member of an organization with such a rich medical and professional history.  Also, by being associated with this group, Gina Merritt is able to take advantage of the ATS Research Program, which allows professionals to investigate relative questions of interest.  She also has access to peer-reviewed medical studies that sometimes bring about groundbreaking scientific revelations.  She also has the ability to develop and participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) events at the annual International Conference.

For Gina Merritt, membership with the American Thoracic Society has proven to be invaluable.  She hopes to maintain her membership for many years to come!

Board Certified in Sleep Medicine: Gina Merritt

If you’re struggling to get the right amount of sleep, and you live in Middletown, Connecticut (or nearby), then you might need to talk to Gina Merritt at Middlesex Multispecialty Group.  Merritt, who is a doctor of osteopathic medicine, has several specialties, including pulmonary disease treatment and critical care medicine.

However, Gina Merritt is also certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in Sleep Medicine.  The American Board of Internal Medicine offers certification in 19 subspecialties.  For Gina Merritt, few subspecialties can trump the importance of Sleep Medicine.  Merritt knows that when the body isn’t able to get enough sleep, other critical functions begin to fail as well.

Gina Merritt always reminds her patients that sleep deprivation doesn’t just mean that your body is tired and your eyes are heavy.  When people are deprived of sleep, critical functions like proper metabolism and even heart rate can vary in unhealthy ways.  Our bodies need sleep just like they need food, water, and exercise.  When we fail to get that sleep, says Gina Merritt, our bodies start to reap the negative side effects.

With her American Board of Internal Medicine certification in Sleep Medicine, Gina Merritt feels more prepared than ever before to help those who are struggling with sleep deprivation.  However, sleep deprivation isn’t the only kind of sleep issues that people might experience.  While sleep deprivation is the most common type of issue, oversleeping or erratic sleeping can be serious issues for many other people.  Gina Merritt, however, is trained to address these difficult cases as well with her ABIM certification.

The certification program in Sleep Medicine was developed by the ABIM in conjunction with the American Board of Family Medicine, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Otolaryngology, and the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Middlesex Multispecialty Group: Gina Merritt

For Dr. Gina Merritt, where she works is almost important as the work she does.  Of course, as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Gina Merritt believes that few other things in life are more important than the actual work she does.  But, when it comes to her professional life, Gina Merritt is picky about where she wants to be.  However, pickiness is a good thing in this case!

In the past, Gina Merritt has completed residencies and done other work at Yale-New Haven Hospital and at the West Haven, VA Hospital.  However, Merritt believes that not even these institutions top Middlesex Multispecialty Group, which is located in Middletown, Connecticut.

Merritt thinks so highly of Middlesex Multispecialty Group for one reason: the people.  From phenomenal staff to the patients she values so much, Gina Merritt believes that it’s the people at Middlesex Multispecialty Group that make the place so special.  Merritt loves her place of work, and has no interest in going elsewhere.

Gina Merritt is the first to admit that there are bigger and better facilities all over the country, but she believes that the close and intimate nature of Middlesex Multispecialty actually makes for better care in the long run.  She often tells patients that they may be able to get cutting edge technology by traveling all over North America, but they won’t find the same personal touch that is at Middlesex Multispecialty Group.

Of course, the medical doctors and other doctors of osteopathic medicine at Middlesex are more than qualified!  Gina Merritt, herself, holds four certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).  In addition to standard ABIM certification, Gina Merritt is certified in Pulmonary Disease Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine.

Gina Merritt recommends that anyone suffering in the Middletown, Connecticut area come in to see the doctors at Middlesex Multispecialty Group.
